Why Backpack Fit Matters
Even the best backpack won’t feel right if it isn’t adjusted properly. A well‑fitted pack helps distribute weight efficiently, reduces fatigue, and keeps you comfortable mile after mile.
This guide walks you through how to fit and adjust your backpack, from positioning the hipbelt and shoulder straps to fine‑tuning load lifters and sternum straps. No matter the distance, a well‑adjusted pack moves with you, helping you carry your load more comfortably and efficiently.
Understand your backpack
Knowing how the key components of your backpack work together makes a big difference in comfort and performance. Each strap and support element plays a specific role in stabilising your load and distributing weight efficiently. Understanding their purpose will help you adjust your pack correctly and get the most comfortable fit for every adventure.
Hipbelt
This is the belt you buckle across your hips, and it allows you to carry the weight of your pack on your hips instead of your shoulders. You should position the belt pad 1” (2.5cm) above your iliac crest.
Shoulder strap
These are the straps by which you carry your pack. They should form to the contours of your natural shape and rest completely against your shoulders, wrapping about 8 cm below the top of your shoulder blade.
Sternum strap
This is the strap that buckles directly over your chest, at about heart-height used to keep the shoulder straps in place and correctly positioned on your body. This strap should not distort the shape of the shoulder strap or inhibit your breathing.
Load lifter strap
These straps connect the shoulder strap to the top support structure of the pack. They draw the weight of the pack towards your center of gravity to provide stability and energy savings and allow you to shift weight from your upper body to your hips.
Stay comfortable on the move
As you hike, your comfort needs can change with terrain, pace, and pack weight. By adjusting your straps on the move, you can shift the load between your hips and shoulders to manage fatigue and stay balanced. Knowing when and how to make these small adjustments helps maintain efficiency and keeps your pack feeling comfortable throughout the day.
Transfer Weight to Hipbelt
Shifting more weight to your hips is ideal on flatter terrain or longer stretches, as your hips are better suited to carry heavier loads and reduce strain on your shoulders. By loosening the shoulder strap adjustment then tightening the load lifter straps on the top of the shoulder strap, you are taking weight supported by the shoulder straps and transferring it to your hipbelt.
Transfer Weight to Shoulder Straps
Transferring weight to your shoulders can be helpful on steeper climbs, uneven ground, or technical sections, where a slightly higher center of gravity can improve control and mobility. By loosening the load lifter straps on the top of the shoulder strap and then tightening the shoulder strap adjustment, you are taking weight supported by your hipbelt and moving it to your shoulder straps.
Understanding different backpack fit options
Gregory backpacks are designed with different sizing systems to accommodate a wide range of body shapes, torso lengths, and fit preferences. Whether you’re looking for a simple, versatile fit or a more personalised setup, understanding the available pack sizing options will help you choose a backpack that feels comfortable, balanced, and supportive on the trail.
To get started, we recommend measuring your torso length to determine which sizing system is right for you.
One Size
This means that a pack comes in one size and is designed to fit a wide range or torso lengths and body shapes —so you don’t need to worry about the small, medium, and large stuff.
Adjustable
Packs with adjustable sizing are available in S, M, L. These packs allow for changes in torso length within the sizes indicated. Example - M fits torso lengths 38,1 - 48,3cm.
Custom Fit
Custom fit packs have individual hipbelt and harness components that can be swapped out to create the perfect fit combination for you. Example – A Baltoro size S can be equipped with size large harnesses, and a size large hipbelt. Remember – start with your correct torso length to get the bag size, then you can custom fit your hipbelt and harness components.
