SUSTAINABILITY & RESPONSIBILITY

OUR APPROACH

Since 1977, we have been relentless in our pursuit to design and build high-performance, high-quality packs, bags, and gear management products. This pursuit of best-in-class performance and quality has led us to where we are today and is woven into our DNA. Through many years of trial and error we have learned that building long-lasting high-performance products is a complex journey that requires a moral and scientific compass. It requires new ideas and constant evolution, building concept models, testing them, evaluating, then repeating the process until you have a result you are proud of. Through clever and deliberate innovation, taking substantive steps to measure and reduce our footprint, and providing gateway opportunities to expose more people to the benefits of the outdoors, we aim to move toward a better future for our people, our brand, and our planet. We organize our efforts into the three areas that help us focus, implement, measure, and share our progress with the world:

PRODUCT

Product is at the core of everything we do. Thoughtfully engineered, innovation driven, premium quality, and designed by hand locally in our prototype lab in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA.

Creating high quality, long-lasting products backed up by a 50-Year Guarantee*:

It is in our DNA to build products that last. This foundation of durability and longevity is the best way for us to minimize our impact on the planet. One way we validate this foundation is simply by standing behind the products we build with our 50-Year Guarantee*. We honor this guarantee because the brand's very foundation was built on designing and manufacturing superior, long-lasting, and highly durable products. This foundation of quality is built into our Design Principles that our product creation and sourcing teams live by day in and day out.

Designing products with sustainability in mind:  All the way back in 2019 we partnered with a leading firm in Germany to build a customized Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tool to calculate the environmental footprint of the energy used and the impact generated. This allows us to measure the impact potential of the products' full lifecycle:

  • raw good creation;
  • manufacturing;
  • packaging;
  • transport from our factory to our warehouse;
  • distribution to the end-consumer or retailer;
  • End of life of the product.

This gives us the ability to adapt a product's design, manufacturing, and material selections to reduce its impact on the planet before it is built. For example, while developing our Rhune 28 daypack we changed the main body material from a virgin nylon to a 100% recycled polyester during the development process and changed the polyester liner from 20% to 40% recycled content by weight. These changes reduced the carbon footprint impact by 59.5% relative to the same pack build from virgin nylon. This process also allows us to be more transparent with our consumers by sharing product data on our website for our pack and bag categories of products we perform LCA’s on, so everyone can better understand the environmental footprint of our products.

Designing for repair and making repair easier for you: We have learned a great deal over the years about how to design products that are built to last. This commitment to quality has led to special design considerations and new construction standards to ensure we design products that can be easily repaired to keep them out of landfills as long as possible. This mentality and discipline extend the lifespan of products by enabling us to offer free repair on any defects in materials or workmanship as part of our 50-Year Guarantee*.

In 2022, we launched an enhanced DIY repair parts program. This collection of parts is specially designed to be field-serviceable to help reduce the footprint of the back-and-forth shipping requirements to our repair centres. This provides quicker service to get back out on the trail and helps extend the life of a product that may otherwise be replaced. We have now made our DIY hardware available for consumers to purchase directly on our website. Any product that is shipped to our repair centre for warranty claims that is not repairable is disassembled and separated into parts we can use for future repairs by our skilled repair technicians.

Rigorously testing our products: Product testing and inspection of raw materials, components, and finished goods are conducted at each of our manufacturing facilities to ensure that standards of workmanship are maintained. We also have built our own customized finished-goods testing machines in our Salt Lake City lab. We have an extensive global network of testers and ambassadors who ensure all new products are wear-tested in real world environments to ensure reliability and functionality over time.

Prototyping in-house: We design, pattern, and build new product prototypes in our Salt Lake City-based headquarters office, which maximizes our ability to innovate and reduces our travel and freight footprint.

Measuring our impact: To measure our impact using our LCA tool, each type of material in our products is weighted individually to calculate the unique impact of each material separately before aggregating the overall impact. We measure and share the impact of the six categories below:

  • Carbon Footprint: Greenhouse Gases such as CO2 and methane
  • Acidification: emissions that cause negative effects on soil, fish, and forests
  • Water Pollution: All potential impacts of macronutrients, which can shift species composition and elevate biomass production
  • Smog Formation: Otherwise known as ozone creation, these are emissions of precursors that contribute to ground level smog formation
  • Primary Energy Demand: Total energy consumed
  • Blue Water Consumption: Net intake and release of fresh water

PLANET

We are dedicated to building highly durable, long-lasting products and back them up with a 50-Year Guarantee*. We work to measure, track, and reduce the environmental impact of our supply chain.

Reducing our climate impact: The vast majority of our carbon emissions come from the materials used in our products. That's why we're focused on increasing the use of materials such as recycled polyester, recycled polypropylene and polycarbonate as well as recycled aluminum. To formalize our commitment, we have set an ambitious target to reduce emissions from purchased goods and services by 52% per unit of gross profit by 2030, compared to our 2022 baseline. This target directly contributes to Samsonite’s (our parent company) group-wide science-based near-term climate target they have set for the entire organization and has been validated by the Science-based Targets initiative (see page 37 in our ESG report).

Using 100% renewable electricity: To minimize greenhouse gas emissions from our own operations, we are committed to maintaining use of 100% renewable electricity across our retail stores, distribution facilities and offices that we operate. We achieve this through a combination of participation in renewable power programs and purchasing renewable energy certificates. We’ve also installed LED lighting, occupancy sensors and upgraded heating and cooling systems across our operations.

Using recycled materials: One insight we have gained from our product lifecycle analysis tools is the fact that Virgin Nylon is one of the biggest offenders when it comes to our overall environmental footprint due to its higher relative footprint relative to recycled nylon or polyester. We have shifted our energy to focus on developing and sourcing alternative material and textile technologies that still meet our strict quality standards. One example is a custom-developed 40% post-consumer recycled PET polyester pack liner material. We have migrated 99% of our virgin nylon pack lining material to this lower-impact textile.

Switching to lower impact packaging: Although the nature of our product category has limited packaging, we still continuously work to lower the impact of the packaging we do use. For example, we overhauled our hydration accessory collection to 50% recycled kraft paper packaging, we shifted to 99% recycled LDPE polybags for all of our backpack products, and we redesigned all our hangtags to use FSC-certified mix paper.

Using safer chemicals:

  • Chemical Management & Reach Compliant Products: All our products meet the European REACH regulatory standards (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals) requiring rigorous chemical testing to eliminate hazardous chemicals. This requires every material on every product to be tested and approved before production begins and changed to an alternative material if any raw goods or componentry of the product does not meet their strict human health and environmental standards. We continuously monitor the changing requirements of REACH and update our testing requirements. https://echa.europa.eu/regulations/reach/understanding-reach.
  • Designed without PFAS: 100% of our products are designed without PFAS, including all the water repellency technology we use on exterior fabrics.
  •  Using Bluesign-certified Hardware & Buckles: 90% of all hardware and buckles have been converted to Bluesign-approved sources. https://www.bluesign.com/en

The Conservation Alliance Partnership: Gregory has been a proud member of the conservation alliance for the last thirty years. TCA harnesses the collective power of businesses and outdoor communities to fund and advocate for the protection of North America’s natural places. This partnership helps protect our outdoor playground. Gregory cherishes our wild lands, not only own generation but for future generations to come. https://www.conservationalliance.com/who-we-are/

European Outdoor Conservation Association (EOCA) Partnership: Gregory has supported the EOCA since 2016. They are a charitable organization set up in 2006 by the European Outdoor Group (EOG), to enable companies from the outdoor sector to have a bigger impact looking after the natural environment by working together. EOCA has funded 214 projects in 65 countries around the world, investing nearly six million euros in conservation. We support them with the same passion and consistency as the Conservation Alliance here in North America to help protect land and animal habitats across Europe. https://www.eocaconservation.org/about-us/

PEOPLE

We bring together a diverse mix of skills, experience, and backgrounds, and invest in long-term relationships. We support the development of our teams and partners so they can hone their craft, grow with the brand, and create meaningful, lasting careers.

People at the Center: At Gregory we know that our people are our greatest asset. Our approach has always been to attract and retain the best talent in the industry and provide meaningful development opportunities to everyone on the team. We reward and recognize performance and ensure a safe working environment while promoting and supporting employee health and wellbeing. Our family of employees have chosen to combine their passion for outdoor life and discovery with their professional careers, so we strive to enable a balanced lifestyle that allows the team to thrive in all aspects of their lives.

We Live Where We Play: Thanks to our global headquarters’ convenient location at the base of the Wasatch Mountains just south of Salt Lake City, Utah, our team has incredibly convenient access to local trails and walkability to local restaurants and shops. If you drop into our office on any given day, you’ll find plenty of bikes, skis, dirty shoes, and nearly as many dogs as there are people. Plus gear, of course, tons of backpacks and gear! We build our prototypes right here in our office and then walk out the back door to test them. The 270-degree mountain views from our office inspires and motivates us to push the boundaries of new product design and creation and keeps us connected to the wild lands we play in.

Our Manufacturing Partners and Our Ethical Charter and Social Compliance Program: We work very closely with our suppliers to promote fair and safe working environment. We ask all finished goods suppliers, as well as certain raw material and component suppliers to sign our Ethical Charter, which is our Supplier code of conduct. This charter sets out 10 key principles for respecting people in our supply chain. Our suppliers are then required to share our expectations with their own suppliers. We also enroll our suppliers into our Global Social Compliance Program for auditing. Throughout the year, we conduct various activities, such as supplier trainings, to promote a greater understanding of social compliance topics and improve supplier performance in subsequent certifications and audits.
